Those fridges that recognize your groceries sent me down a rabbit hole:
What does the AI actually cost?
With a few assumptions, I got about 86¢ per fridge per month using a small cloud vision model. Across a million fridges, that’s over $10 million a year.
The first chart compares ten years of cloud processing against putting $25 of extra AI hardware in each fridge. The hybrid scenario handles most checks locally and sends 10% to the cloud.
The second chart looks at what happens if cloud pricing gets cheaper. Cloud discounts obviously exist, but the 50% and 90% figures here are just what-ifs, not known manufacturer deals.
This is a rough cost comparison, not proof that each setup would recognize groceries equally well.
Still thought it was interesting how quickly the numbers change once you scale it up.
